12 Day Victoria
Falls - Zanzibar, Claudious Tours and Safaris offers
the most unique travel options for overlanders and backpackers
who wish to combine the best of Africa scenery with
wildlife viewing and specialty travel. This spatial
overland tour package suites the camper that is on a
shoestring budget and wishes to venture into East Africa
Region towards Zanzibar.
This African overland tour includes highlights
like South Luangwa and Lake Malawi so get your camping
gear and join the adventurist group.
Overland Tour Itinerary
Day
1: Victoria Falls
The overlanding Group officially begin the tour at 9am
at our camp in Livingstone on the Zambian side of the
Zambezi River, but those joining us in Zimbabwe will
need to be at Savanna at 7am. The overland-truck and
guides will stay at Savanna Lodge the evening prior
to departure. The overlanding Group will leave for Zambia
at 8am to collect those joining us there. The overlanding
Group spend the day enjoying the activities in Livingstone
or finalizing arrangements for our trip before returning
to base in the evening.

Jumping, Elephant Back Safari, Zambezi sunset cruise,
Vic Falls NP

Route: Vic Falls to Livingstone. 30 km. Border crossing.
Travel time: ±1 hr
Day
2: Lusaka,Zambia
The overlanding Group leave behind the excitement of
Vic Falls and head off on your expedition. Your route
towards the bustling Zambian capital of Lusaka tourist
sites and takes you along an interesting road. The overlanding
Group enjoy the evening relaxing after your long drive.Area

Route: Livingstone to Lusaka. ±520 km. Travel
time: ±7-8 hrs
Day
3: Luangwa River
The overlanding Group begin the day with some shopping
in Lusaka before heading northeast towards the Luangwa
River where you spend the night. This is an interesting
area full of friendly locals and a walk along the river
is a rewarding experience

Route: Lusaka to Luangwa. ±300 km. Travel time:
±4-5 hrs. Bad roads.
Day
4-5: South Luangwa
The overlanding Group drive from Luangwa River to the
South Luangwa National Park where you will spend two
nights on the banks of the river. Much of day 4 will
be spent getting to South Luangwa. If you get there
early then an optional excursion to the community textile
factory is recommended.
On Day 4 we partake of
the following while staying at the camp mentioned: -

Luangwa National Park
Facilities: Water not drinkable, good ablutions and
hot showers
Route: Luangwa to South Luangwa National Park. ±300
km. Travel time: ±4-6 hrs. Bad roads.
On Day 5 we are involved
in various activities. You can choose between a morning
or night game drive and a guided game walk accompanied
by a professional local guide. If the South Luangwa
is not for you then relax by the pool or spend some
time with the local communities here. South Luangwa
is home to many unique animals that are not found elsewhere.
On occasion in the rainy season it is impossible or
inadvisable to attempt to reach South Luangwa NP. If
this happens then an alternative itinerary will be followed.
Normally the overlanding Groups decide to spend the
additional nights in Malawi or on Zanzibar.

hot showersToday is put aside for all the activities
that are on offer here. You can partake in any or all
of them, however your budget dictates, or you can relax
and go for walks close to the camp.
Day
6: Malawi - Luwawa Forest
The overlanding Group leave South Luangwa early and
pass through the Zambia-Malawi border. Heading north
you enter the highlands of Malawi and spend the night
at Luwawa Forest Lodge. There are some wonderful hikes
in the area as well as other activities.

Facilities: Water not drinkable, bar, lake, hot showers
Route: South Luangwa National to Luwawa Forest. ±440
km. Travel time: ±6-7 hrs plus border crossing
The overlanding Group
cross the border in to Malawi and drive up in to the
highlands to Luwawa Forest - this is part of the largest
man-made forest in Africa. The altitude means that it
can get very cold here on winter evenings. In the summer
there are small sail boats that you can sail on the
dam and there are some short and long hiking trails
Day
7-8: Central Lake Malawi
Overland campers soon catch sight of the lake where
you will spend the next couple of carefree days. For
the more adventurous there are endless leisure and water
sport activities. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere
and relax in one of the most scenic and memorable holiday
destinations in Africa! The evenings are spent beside
its tranquil waters, enjoying the party atmosphere of
this famous spot.

fishing, canoeing, horse riding and many more…

Accommodation: overland-ing Camp: Kande Beach. If there
is availability you can upgrade your accommodation at
your own cost
Facilities: Water not drinkable but good for cooking,
bar, good ablutions, craft market, restaurant and beach
Route: Luwawa Forest to Kande Beach. ±200 km.
Travel time: ±4-5 hrs
Today will be the overlanding
Group first sight of Lake Malawi! The overlanding Group
might be very worried about bilharzia in the water.
Bilharzia does exist in the lake but they haven't found
traces of it around Kande in recent years. You can go
for a test 6 months after the tour - antibiotics will
be enough to cure this.
Day
9-10: Northern Malawi
You continue a short way further along the northern
part of the lake, close to the Livingstonia Mountains
where you will continue your relaxation for the next
two days. Take a stroll through the nearby craft market
and make friends with the people of Malawi or take a
hike into the mountains if the weather is favorable.

Facilities: Water drinkable, bar, cold showers
Route: Kande to Chitimba. ±320 km. Travel time:
±4-5 hrs
The adventurous can go
hiking up to Livingstonia or the waterfall. This is
quite a tough hike and you'll have to leave early. The
return trip to the waterfall takes about 5 hours and
the trip to Livingstonia 7-8 hours. You must take lunch
with you as well as enough drinking water, sunscreen,
hiking shoes, hat. You should also take some money as
they charge entrance fee to the museum at Livingstonia.
There is abseiling here too - it can be booked through
Chitimba Beach Camp.
Alternatively you can just have a relaxing day at the
lakeside.
Day
11: Iringa, Tanzania
Today the overlanding Group make the border crossing
out of malawi africato the Iringa region . Leaving the
lake behind you, you head for your first night in Tanzania
and gain an hour as you cross into the East African
time zone. As the overlanding Group climb out of the
Great Rift Valley through some spectacular mountain
passes, you pass the vast tea plantations in the highlands.
The overlanding Group camp is outside Iringa.

Accommodation: Camp: Kisolonza Farm. If there is availability
you can upgrade your accommodation at your own cost
Facilities: Drinkable water, bar, hot showers, veggies
shop
Route: Chitimba to Iringa. ±600 km. Travel time:
±10-11 hrs plus border crossing
Tanzanian roads are generally
in a good condition, but they are also very narrow.
This doesn't slow down other heavy traffic though. In
order for us to get to our destination safely the driver
will have to drive slowly in places. This camp is at
high altitude and can get cold.
Day
12: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
The overlanding Group route takes us on a transit through
Mikumi National Park to the historical port city of
Dar es Salaam. The overlanding Group will go down a
beautiful mountain pass and go through an area called
Baobab Valley, before reaching our destination.

Route: Iringa to Dar es Salaam. ±550 km. Travel
time: ±9-10 hrs
The overlanding Tour
ends today but you are more than welcome to join the
optional Zanzibar 2 night excursion.
